Skopje hosted the third edition of EuroSDC
For the third time, debaters from across the whole of Europe gathered to compete in the IDEA European Schools Debating Championship, the high school debate competition, which our members brought as an alternative to the World Championship. This time, debaters spent an exciting weekend in Skopje!
When our members first came up with the idea of organising our own championship for Europe in the WSDC debating format, nobody could have known whether it would be a big success or a complete failure. We wanted to create an opportunity for the best European teams to debate against each other which is not always possible on a world wide level. After this 3rd year, we can say that it truly was a great success! EuroSDC is a stable space where European teams can combine competition with innovative approaches to learning.
More Than Just a Competition
This year, the debates were particularly interesting. Participants debated motions that reflect the complex challenges we face in 2026. This showed their debating skills and their understanding of global issues and their ability to think in a wider pragmatical perspective, not only based on their opinion. But, as every tournament, EuroSDC is not just about the debates, it is also about the conversations after the debate is over, coffee breaks, games, the neverending strategy and speeches preparations and the friendships that are formed there (and which cross international borders).
In the breakout rounds all teams debated motions:
- THBT European democracies should adopt a semi-closed primary system to select party candidates for their domestic elections
- THS the parenting model of unconditional lifelong support
- TH, as the Catholic Church leadership, W pursue unusual marketing strategies to attract young believers (eg. Vatican backed influencers, Raves and parties with Catholic music, Prayer apps, Catholic dating apps etc.)
- THW require all banks to participate in the bank bailout fund
- THR the rise of comedic journalism (eg. The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Mock the Week etc.)
Then breaking teams debated in the:
- Quarterfinals - THBT women’s justice movements should engage men through emphasizing how they can also benefit from the fall of the patriarchy, instead of focusing on their duty towards women
- Semifinals - THO the practice of asylum externalisation
- Novice Finals - THS nationalising the gambling industry
- Grand Final - THW implement the MAGIC
Hospitality in Skopje
Our gratitude goes to our member the Youth Educational Forum (YEF) and their volunteers, who managed to organise a smooth and exciting educational event. The whole team ensured a great event and Skopje provided a fascinating cultural backdrop for this year's edition. The combination of the city’s energy, organisational certainty and the educative-competitive balance of the event left a big mark on every participant.
We would also like to thank everyone who debated, judged, or organised, and we are looking forward to next year, to seeing all of you again for the fourth edition of EuroSDC in Italy!
