National delegations from 68 nations completed their Stage 1 registration to participate in the 2022 World Schools Debating Championship organised by IDEA.

In August this year, over young people from Albania, Aotearoa New Zealand, Argentina, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Brasil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Haïti, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Latvia, Libya, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sultanate of Oman, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, The Netherlands, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, USA, Vietnam, Wales, and Zimbabwe will represent their nation, debating multiple topics currently being selected and prepared by the WSDC 2022 Motions Committee, a group of prominent debate experts elected to the position by the voting delegates of nations represented at WSDC.

The World Schools Debating Championships are hosted every year in a different country and represent the World Cup for secondary-level school debaters. Each nation can be represented by only one team comprised of at least 3 and at most 5 students. In the coming months, debate coaches will help students prepare for the highly competitive event. During the eight preliminary rounds of the event, any team can meet any other team at the competition based on results from previous rounds, allowing students to debate the most pressing contemporary issues with their peers from all over the globe. Teams boasting the best results advance to the elimination rounds all the way up to the Grand Final, where the Schools Debate Champions for the year are decided.

Many IDEA member organizations are involved in preparing national teams for the Championship. making this event especially important for us and grateful for the WSDC community who awarded hosting rights for WSDC 2022 to IDEA. Some of the previous hosts include Macau, Mexico, Thailand, Croatia, Indonesia, Germany, and Singapore. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary to move the Championships online for the time being. Nevertheless, we are looking forward to organising this online event and welcoming over 600 participants.
