PEACE Panel Discussion on Mental Health
On 19 August 2026, we gathered young people from the Netherlands in Blokzijl, the Netherlands, for a panel discussion on mental health, safe spaces, and the role of youth communities in supporting young people’s well-being.
Our discussion focused on how young people experience mental health and well-being within the communities we participate in, including debate clubs, youth organisations, and volunteering initiatives. Participants reflected on an important question: Are the spaces where young people come together to learn, volunteer, and connect truly safe and supportive for their mental health?
Drawing on experiences from different cultural backgrounds, we shared perspectives on the challenges young people may face within their communities, as well as the ways organisations can create environments where everyone feels welcome, respected, and comfortable speaking openly. The exchange highlighted how expectations, group dynamics, and organisational culture can influence whether young people feel supported and able to participate fully.
A key part of the discussion focused on practical steps that youth organisations and their members can take to create safer spaces. We went deep into the importance of listening to young people, encouraging open conversations about well-being, recognising different needs and experiences, and establishing a culture in which asking for support is welcomed rather than stigmatised.
By bringing together voices from different countries and communities, the panel was truly an opportunity to learn from one another, challenge assumptions, and reflect on how individual actions can contribute to more supportive environments. We encouraged everyone to consider not only what their organisations are already doing well, but also what more could be done to ensure that young people feel safe, valued, and heard. At the end of the day, our active members are at the core of our activities.
Ultimately, the discussion reinforced the idea that mental health is not only an individual responsibility. The communities young people belong to also play an important role in shaping their experiences and well-being. Creating safer spaces starts with listening, understanding different perspectives, and taking collective responsibility for building communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
