Empowering Youthwork for the Green Debate at the Slovak Debate League Finals
During the May 10–12, 2025, the Slovak Debate League Finals took place at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava. The prestigious high school tournament brought together 120 debaters and participants from across Slovakia, offering them the chance to test their skills in a variety of challenging motions.
Green Debate in Focus
As part of the Erasmus+ project Empowering Youthwork for the Green Debate, one of the highlighted motions directly addressed climate change:
“All efforts to combat climate change should be directed towards changing consumer behavior.”
To ensure that students could engage meaningfully with this complex topic, they were provided with study materials one week in advance, encouraging in-depth research, reflection, and preparation. This approach underscored the project’s aim of equipping young people with the tools to analyze environmental challenges critically and construct persuasive arguments.

Strengthening Skills, Shaping Futures
By debating such relevant and impactful issues, participants developed their argumentation, critical thinking, and teamwork skills, but even more importantly, deepened their understanding of the diverse strategies required in the fight against climate change.
The Slovak Debate League Finals showed how debate can act as a bridge between education and civic engagement, empowering young people to become active, informed voices in Europe’s sustainability journey.
