WSDA Youth Debate and Analytical Thinking Training in Kranjska Gora

WSDA Youth Debate and Analytical Thinking Training in Kranjska Gora

From 28 June to 5 July 2025, educators and youth workers from Croatia, Slovenia, and the Netherlands gathered in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for the WSDA “Youth Debate and Analytical Thinking Training for Educators and Coaches.” The training was part of the Erasmus+ Youth Accreditation and was coordinated by the Croatian Debate Society (HDD) in cooperation with IDEA and ZIP.

The week-long program focused on helping educators strengthen their skills in using debate as a method for civic learning and youth participation. Each morning introduced new topics such as argumentation, facilitating discussions, and working with sensitive issues. In the afternoons, participants took part in practice sessions, observed mock debates, and exchanged feedback with trainers and peers.

Holding the training in Kranjska Gora allowed the group to connect with a larger youth education event taking place at the same time. This gave participants the chance to observe young people debating in real situations, which added a valuable practical element to the learning process.

The group included educators who run debate clubs as extracurricular activities, as well as volunteers from youth organizations who work directly with young people. Trainers from HDD and IDEA led the sessions, while ZIP supported the organization and logistics. The program was intensive but supportive, and participants often commented on how useful it was to combine theory, observation, and practical exercises in one setting.

By the end of the week, participants felt more confident in leading debate activities, giving feedback, and creating inclusive learning environments. Many plan to start or expand debate-based programs in their schools and youth centers. The partners – HDD, IDEA, and ZIP – also agreed to continue their cooperation and are already planning the next edition of the training in 2026.

The training was another step in IDEA’s ongoing effort to strengthen debate-based youth work across Europe and to make debate a regular part of civic education and active participation programs.
