Information & Application Form for Prospective New Board Members

IDEA is a global non-governmental organization (NGO) (specifically a Stichting/Foundation) headquartered and registered in the Netherlands. IDEA works to empower young people to become active citizens who participate constructively and in an informed critical way in society at all levels, and support its members in their national efforts.

IDEA is a membership organization and the members are debate NGOs in their respective countries. Together, these members form the General Assembly of IDEA (current membership: https://idebate.net/who-we-are/our-community, and IDEA connects them, supports them and works with them on an international level.

The Board is appointed by the General Assembly of Members. The Board directs the strategy of the organization and supports its long term stability. The Board is also the legal representative of the organization and official ultimate beneficiary owner (UBO). The Board holds joint responsibility for, and representation of, the organization. The Board supports and oversees the Executive Director in carrying out IDEAs mission and helps out in other areas where able or appropriate, such as member relations, alumni, fundraising, and visibility.

  • Believe in and want to help achieve the mission of IDEA, to promote debate and critical thinking as ways to empower young people

  • Attend full Board meetings (usually online & quarterly, with occasional tasks in between)

  • Board members are encouraged to take on a defined portfolio on the Board - ie, HR, finance, fundraising, new member recruitment, etc.

  • Monthly commitment:  2-6 hours/month

  • Attend at least 1 required in-person Board meeting / year; this often overlaps with the General Assembly (associated costs paid for by IDEA)

  • Opportunities to visit/attend Member or network events and represent IDEA

  • Active promotion and advocacy for IDEA as deemed necessary by the board

  • Board member terms are 3 years; can be re-elected for one additional 3 year term

Formal arrangements:
All board members are registered in Dutch Chamber of Commerce and Ultimate Beneficial Owner registries held by the Dutch government. For this purpose copies of personal documents as well as confirmation of address have to be provided by successful board applicants.

All board members are insured for liability and any personal financial consequences that may arise if such an error occurs. The Board is insured through a governor liability insurance (“bestuurdersaansprakelijkheidsverzekering”), for a maximum of €1.500.000,- per incident and €2.500.000,- per year.

Deadline to apply: 31 July 2026

Candidates will be voted on at the General Assembly, which will take place on 28 August 2026, and notified shortly thereafter. Candidates are encouraged to join the General Assembly online. The link will be shared during August. This will give candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to the representatives of IDEA member organisations and answer any questions.

  • Do you have debate competition/training experience? Please describe.
  • Why do you want to be on the Board of IDEA? What do you want to accomplish as a Board Member?
  • What skills / attributes do you have that you think would be useful to the Board and help advance the mission of IDEA?
  • Would you be able to meet the minimum expectations for board members (described above), including committing the 2-6 hours/month involved, attending at least 1 in-person meeting / year, and leading at least one of the Board’s work items?
  • Is there anything preventing or restricting you from working with children and young people or youth organizations in your country or the European Union?

  • Your country of residence
