IDEA joins EYF Learning and Networking Days
Last week in Brussels, IDEA joined more than 30 international youth organizations for the EYF Learning and Networking Days, co-organised by the Council of Europe’s European Youth Foundation and the European Youth Forum.
We met many new potential partners and learned more about Council of Europe youth work strategy. What stood out, however, was a deep dive into the New Democratic Pact for Europe, the Council of Europe’s ambition for a reset for democracy in the 21st century.
Why the New Democratic Pact Matters to Debaters
The Pact reinforces a core IDEA conviction that a resilient democracy requires more than just stable institutions; it requires a vibrant deliberative infrastructure to sustain them. While the Council of Europe warns of democratic backsliding, IDEA has long championed the specific cognitive defense systems that prevent polarization from turning into systemic collapse: multi-perspectivity, evidence-based reasoning, and the ability to navigate high-stakes disagreement.
The Council of Europe is shifting its focus toward "Democratic Security." This means reinforcing the skills that debate provides: critical thinking, media literacy, and the ability to bridge political and cultural divides through dialogue. For IDEA, this Pact is a powerful endorsement of our mission to ensure youth voices are not just heard, but are central to the structural renewal of our institutions.
Our takeaways from Brussels:
- We explored the Pact’s three pillars, Learning, Protecting, and Innovating, which will define how Europe supports youth-led initiatives for the next decade.
- The event emphasized that democracy must be a lived experience. We discussed how public discourse can serve as laboratories for this new era of civic engagement.
- We met with the Advisor to the Commissioner for Human Rights to discuss the risks young human rights defenders face today and how IDEA can help protect the space for dissent and free speech.
IDEA is committed to connecting our global network of debaters with the principles of the New Democratic Pact. As we look toward our 2027 project cycles, we are excited to design new platforms where debate doesn't just happen in a room, but actively contributes to a more resilient, inclusive, and future-ready Europe.
