Green Debate at the University of Amsterdam
The end of summer was filled with a triathlon of Green Debate events held across Dutch schools, showing how debate can help young people discuss civic and environmental issues. Students at the University of Amsterdam had the opportunity to experience structured debate as a new way of transforming thoughts into arguments and deeper knowledge.
As part of the Erasmus+ EU co-funded project Empowering Youthwork for the Green Debate, a series of activities were held at the University of Amsterdam, in cooperation with ASDV Bonaparte, the local youth debate club.
The programme included three back-to-back sessions and an additional debate activity, bringing together a total of 88 participants. These sessions gave students the opportunity to explore pressing environmental issues through structured debate, while also learning how debate can be a powerful tool for civic engagement.
The collaboration with ASDV Bonaparte ensured that the activities were both academically rigorous and youth-focused. By working with young debaters in a university setting, the project was able to connect climate literacy with critical thinking, preparing participants to reflect on the role of debate in shaping a more sustainable future.
