First International Conference on Debate and Dialogue takes place in Doha, Qatar

The first-ever International Conference on Debate and Dialogue recently kicked off in Doha, Qatar, opening up an important platform for the global debate community. IDEA’s Executive Director joined the opening panel discussions.

The conference aims to stimulate discussions on the position, potential, and barriers to establishing wide-reaching debate programmes and using debate-based methods in teaching, underlining the significance of debate and dialogue in enriching global knowledge production.

Organised by the QatarDebate Center and supported by Qatar Foundation, this conference creates the space for researchers, academics, and debate enthusiasts to delve into critical issues in the field of debate and related disciplines. The opening of the two-day event included a speech by Her Excellency Minister of State for International Cooperation Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, and another by Executive Director of QatarDebate Center Dr. Hayat Abdullah Maarafi.

At IDEA, we welcome all efforts to further support international cooperation between debate-focused organizations, research and educational institutions, and donors who recognize the crucial role of argumentation, dialogue, critical thinking, and information literacy in creating a more informed, connected world. We are particularly grateful for the opportunity to participate at the conference where Bojan Marjanović, our Executive Director, shared our vision and strategy during the first conference event - the panel discussion on the role and impact of debate institutes - alongside Dr. Joshua Park (Board Member, World Schools Debating Championships), Salim Al Shamakhi (Vice Chairperson, Oman Debates), Mizan Muhammad (Executive Director IIUM World Debate and Oratory Centre), and Mohamed Abu Snaina (Executive Director Dialogue and Debate Association). Presentation of our Europe-wide efforts and local efforts through DiN projects received many positive comments.

International cooperation and support are vital in ensuring debate programs' growth and resilience. We hope this conference is one of many creating the space for that cooperation to form and flourish.
