DISCUSS in Leidschendam-Voorburg: Ending on a High Note

As the DISCUSS project comes to a close, its impact on youth engagement and debate-based learning remains undeniable. The final local participation event at the Tienskip venue in Leidschendam-Voorburg brought together enormous amount of school students for a day of debating with local and national politicians. Aside with guidance from expert coaches, students refined their debating skills, voiced their opinions on green policies, and experienced firsthand the importance of engaging with decision-makers.

On December 19th, 2024, the Tienskip venue in Leidschendam-Voorburg hosted a local participation event as part of the DISCUSS project, where throughout the year we brought debate-based methodology to disadvantaged students, to empower them to enhance their communication and advocacy skills for arguing for green policies with their local representatives. This event brought together 130 high school students for a full day of discussion, collaboration, and debate with both local and national politicians.
The day was designed to engage students in meaningful conversations on pressing social issues. Throughout the event, students worked alongside political leaders, gaining valuable insights and sharing their perspectives on topics that matter to them.
To ensure a productive and guided experience, DebatUnie provided four expert trainers who supported students throughout the day. The trainers facilitated discussions, guided debate sessions, and ensured that students could confidently engage with the politicians in attendance. By fostering a collaborative atmosphere, the trainers helped students refine their arguments and understand the importance of respectful dialogue when discussing sensitive issues.
The event proved to be a great platform for students to connect with decision-makers, voice their opinions, and engage in the democratic process.
As we wrap up the DISCUSS project, we are already looking ahead, excited about the continued impact of it, and by the opportunities it provides for further ways of students engaging with political leaders, exchanging ideas, and contributing to discussions that shape society. We are incredibly proud of all students who took part and excited to see where these experiences lead them.
