DISCUSS in Drachten: Engaging youth in green democracy

Event focused on youth engagement in solving local issues. Participants debated public transport improvements and had a unique opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, including the Minister of Domestic Affairs. Another part of the DISCUSS project, highlighted the importance of giving young people a voice and encouraging them to take an active role in shaping their communities.

On May 22nd, the Sluijsfabriek in Drachten hosted the Mega Community Day, an inspiring youth event dedicated to civic engagement and local problem-solving. The day was organized in the scope of our DISCUSS project, meant to empower youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to engage in debates and advocate for inclusive green policies through local and national discussions with policymakers. This event was aimed to encourage young people to take an active role in democracy by addressing real-world community issues. A notable highlight was the presence of several local politicians, as well as national figures, including the Minister of Domestic Affairs, further emphasizing the importance of decision makers listening to the youth.
Students were given the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on pressing local challenges focusing on public transport improvements. By having the opportunity to directly engage with policymakers and debate issues that impact their day-to-day life, students gained valuable civic experience that will benefit them beyond the event. The discussions encouraged them to think critically about societal challenges, explore different perspectives, and take ownership of the democratic process.
The Mega Community Day in Drachten was a resounding success, reinforcing the importance of youth participation in shaping their communities. Events like these play a crucial role in inspiring the next generation to become active citizens, making their voices heard on local and national levels. We look forward to seeing more initiatives that empower young people to take meaningful action and create change in their own communities and beyond.
