1st Green Debate Tournament Report
In beginning of May, IDEA organised a green debate tournament, one day online debate competition with an environmental focus. Debaters used case studies from our project "Empowering Youth Work for the Green Debate" and then used them in the debate.
About 70 young people and 15 educators joined the first Green Debate Tournament. Most were high school students, with a few university students helping as adjudicators. All rounds were impromptu, meaning that young people had 30 minutes to prepare their arguments. The questions addressed throughout the day were:
- We support using gamification (e.g., apps, games) to improve individual climate awareness.
- We believe that developing countries should not be expected to meet the same environmental standards as developed countries
- We believe that developing countries should not have to slow their growth for the climate.
Debaters have shown how knowledge gained through e-learning and formal education can be expanded through debate. They proved that debate is not just about learning about concepts and ideas, but also finding ways to apply them, question them, and ultimately, defend them.
We are already excited about the follow-up tournament, which is going to happen this Saturday, on the 31st of May!
