EuroSDC returns stronger with its second year
Once again, debaters from all over Europe came together to compete and determine the best team on the continent. The European Schools Debating Championship returned for its second year, continuing to highlight the educational value of debate, critical thinking, and the promotion of democratic values. This year's tournament confirmed its place in the debating world and proved that EuroSDC is here to stay!
The European Schools Debating Championship (EuroSDC) continues to grow as an important event in the debate community. After the first tournament in Prague in 2024, the second edition brought together nearly 200 debaters from 21 countries. From February 28 to March 2, students competed at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania, with the Romanian debating society ARDOR hosting the event.
In the two prepared rounds debaters had the chance to debate the motion “This House believes that the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement would do more good than harm to the EU”. This topic tested their knowledge of European values, economics, and international trade. The tournament continued with four impromptu rounds. While all debates were excellent, only the very best made it to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and at the end the grand final where teams from Slovenia and Romania debated whether "It would be in the best interest of the Republic of Moldova to pursue unification with Romania." After an intense debate, the Slovenian team won the championship.
EuroSDC is more than a competition—it is a space for young debaters to grow, challenge themselves, and connect with others. The tournament gave students a chance to meet peers from other countries, exchange ideas, and share cultural traditions. Many brought national sweets or small flags, creating an atmosphere of friendship and international cooperation.
The event also received recognition from Romanian officials. The Minister of Education, Daniel David, attended the championship, highlighting its importance in developing young people’s critical thinking and communication skills.
A huge thank you goes to all participants, coaches, adjudicators, and, most of all, to the organisers from ARDOR. Without each of you, this tournament would not have been possible. With each edition, the event continues to expand, and we are already looking forward to next year!
