DISCUSS in Arnhem: From Local to Global for High School Students through Debate

Lorentz Lyceum in Arnhem hosted a local debate training, this time focusing on environmental topics. Students not only improved their argumentation and critical thinking skills as always, but also engaged in discussions about issues that directly impact their communities.

On November 29th, 2024, Lorentz Lyceum in Arnhem hosted an exciting debate event as part of the DISCUSS project. Running parallel to the National Debate League (NDL), this open, non-competitive program encouraged students to engage in thought-provoking discussions on environmental policies. Unlike the structured competition, this event welcomed participants who might not have otherwise taken part in a formal debate setting.

Organized by DebatUnie in collaboration with Nuffic and Oracy, the event created a dynamic and inclusive environment where high school students could express their ideas in English. The program was designed especially for students in Dutch-English mixed education programs, offering a space where everyone—regardless of their native language—could discuss, challenge ideas, and defend opinions on equal footing.

The debates were fast-paced and interactive, with students themselves shaping the discussions. By focusing on environmental topics, participants explored pressing local and global issues, deepened their understanding, and developed their argumentation and critical thinking skills. More importantly, the event allowed students to practice public speaking in English, strengthening their confidence in a second language.

Leading up to the event, DebatUnie facilitated training sessions, equipping students with essential debate techniques such as research methods, structured argumentation, and persuasive speaking strategies. These sessions ensured that both experienced debaters and newcomers could participate meaningfully.

By creating an open discussion space, the event encouraged active participation and inclusivity, allowing students who may not typically engage in competitive debating to share their perspectives. The focus on environmental issues provided a direct link to real-world challenges, inspiring students to consider their role in sustainability and civic engagement.

As we reflect on the success of this initiative, we look forward to further opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful discussions that promote democracy, inclusivity, and active participation in shaping their communities and the world around them.
